Izmir Archaeology Museum

Izmir Archaeological Museumis one of the first archaeological museums of the Republican era of Turkey. The museum was suggested for establishment by Aziz Ogan, the 'Asar-ı Atika Inspector' who came to the region in 1914. Although the works were stopped during World War I and the War of Independence, they were restarted in 1924 upon Atatürk's instructions and opened to the public in 1927. Today, as anarchaeological museum, it is one of the most important places to visit in Izmir in terms of both history and culture.

The Establishment Process of the Izmir Archaeological Museum

The museum first began operating under the name 'Asar-ı Antika Museum' in the abandoned Aya Vukla Church in the Basmane district. The name of the museum was changed to 'Izmir Archaeological Museum' in 1943, it moved to Kültürpark in 1951, and finally began providing services in its modern building in Bahribaba Park in Konak in 1984. This long journey shows how important the museum is in terms ofarchaeological discoveriesand artifacts.

Izmir Archaeological Museum is enriched with artifacts obtained fromancient citiessuch as Bayraklı (Smyrna), Ephesus, Pergamum, Teos, Klazomenai and Iasos. The museum collection consists of sculptures, ceramics, coins and stone artifacts, especially from the Roman and Hellenistic periods.

The main sections of the museum include theStone Artifacts Hall,Ekrem Akurgal Ceramics HallandTreasure Room. Some of the most important works that attract visitors are the bust ofHygieia, the goddess of health, and the Bronze Running Athlete statue.
