The original name of Şirince, 'Kırkınca', is given to forty people who hit the mountains in a legendary age. Over time, it became Kirkice, Kirkince and finally 'Ugly' in Greek pronunciation. In the early years of the Republic, the name of the village was changed to 'Şirince' upon the instructions of the governor of the period, Kazım Dirik.

Today, there are still two Greek churches in the village, and the architecture of the village is similar to that of Berat in Southern Albania.
